Small Beginning
2.
We wrote these melodies, these songs for friends, to build up and to please our loved ones and kin, to bring in all the sheaves without the church, and within. Speak to each other with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; sing and make a melody with your heart to the Lord, giving thanks for every little thing in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ--- to God, even the Father, subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear . . . in the fear of . . . in the fear of Christ.
3.
Somebody told me long ago, “You only get the love you show.” But I don’t know if all that’s true, that would mean it all depends on you. You only love for the love you can gain. God doesn’t love this way. Remember we love because He first loved us when we were all a mess. All of these doctors giving advice; they say there’s love without sacrifice. They’ve got their lines so well-rehearsed. They say love yourself first. You only love for the love you can gain. God doesn’t love this way. But what have we learned from what Christ did on the cross, when He counted Himself lost? You say you’ve tried it all, and you’re giving up hope ‘cause no one works out for you. It’s always I, myself, and me. I know it may not make sense, but if you try I know you’re gonna find Him faithful. What would you be losing just to taste and see? You only love for the love you can gain. God doesn’t love this way.
4.
You think that nobody knows about the person you hide inside your mind. You let him out late at night--- he likes to feast on the filth safe from sight. It’s under control. You think no one knows Mister Hyde is really you. Who’s in the looking glass? A stranger’s looking back. You can be sure your sins will find you. It’s getting harder each day. The monster under your skin wants his way. He bulges out at the seams--- the transformation is almost complete. It’s under control. You think no one knows Mr. Hyde is really you. Who’s in the looking glass? A stranger’s looking back. You can be sure your sins will find you. Here’s your chance. Take it, man. Plunge the Sword into its beasty little heart. ‘Cause you may think you fooled all your friends, and if you fool them to the end, then you will find the only place left to hide in is hell. Here’s your chance.
5.
I’m watching from a distance while you fight. I have no idea what it feels like. I’ve never stared death in the eye; I’ve never felt my body dying. You’ve never been more like Christ--- I can see Him with you in the fire. Keep fighting when death is at the door. And I’ll keep hoping and praying and waiting on the Lord.
6.
Have you seen yourself lately my friend? You’re thin, your skin’s so pale and grim. Are you gonna quit at the top or at the bottom? Every point you get is a point with no return. Another fix will make it right. This one’s not the same. You’ll cash your chips in another night. But you wanna finish the game. And since you can’t recall what you felt like as a man, you fail to understand what you’ve become. So you keep on laying tracks into a wasted wonderland where the water turns to sand under the sun. Another fix will make it right. This one’s not the same. You’ll cash your chips in another night but you wanna finish the game. Ever since the Fall, we’ve tried to fill the hole that God made in our souls to be His home. So we shrink down to a size that can be filled by appetites and pretend we’re satisfied being alone. We all feel pain when we withdraw--- when we withdraw from Jesus. Come back, my friend. Come back again. Come back. Come back. Come back to Him.
7.
You don’t want to go out today. People say there’s a lion in the streets--- big and mean . . . Another day perhaps, then. Naw, get on your feet and dance! Open your eyes. Unfold your hands. We’re fighting without you. The rocks and the trees can clap their hands; God doesn’t need you. But you’d be a fool to give up the chance to be of service to--- The God who created the universe planned your birth to fulfill every tittle of His plan. And that’s where you fit in. So get on your feet and dance! Open your eyes. Unfold your hands. We’re fighting without you. When you’re at His throne, what will you say if you’ve spent your life in idle play? Can you pretend that He’ll be pleased? Why do you think He’s at all happy now when He sees what a waste . . . ? Can you look in His face? Did He really die for your slumber and apathy? Poverty’s coming. Can you feel your need rising up like an armed man? So get on your feet and dance! Open your eyes. Unfold your hands. We’re fighting without you. Hey! We’re dying without you.
8.
How long must I see you enthralled with lust, erasing all sign of you? I long to see you in love with God who planted His sign on you. Why did you forget your first Love? Was He not good for you? You hate all that He required so you trade all of His grace for tihs? Why? Why?! Why?!! Why?!!!
9.
Consider it joy when you bear curses and scorn for the sake of the truth. God’s sanctifying you through it all. Don’t hang your head. Don’t you know they may cage your flesh, but only God holds your soul. I admit when I received your call that I had no idea how this could all work out well. Their lies seemed so unstoppable. They call you a fanatic and they steal away your kids. They have no proof. They’re there, therefore, it’s clear that you’re unfit. And if you keep a level head they say that you are cold. And if you get distressed they say you’re just like they’ve been told. They don’t care if you don’t, and they don’t care if you do . . . as long as when the gavel falls, they’ve damned you. Can you hear it? That’s God laughing, God laughing. Go ahead and laugh with Him. And consider it joy . . . He will confuse them in His wrath, and then He’ll set your family firmly on a level place.
10.
Darkness in the temple--- some lamps are burning low. “He’ll come any second!” They’ve been saying that for years. And while they sleep, their nightmares are awake . . . And they try to run on their legs of gum. If only they’d just wake up. But the watchmen’s trumpets are snoring. From the once Puritan North and to the Bible-belt South, the church is lukewarm in Jesus’ mouth. Neither hot to restore, nor cold to refresh--- the church: of the world, in the flesh. Pay her wage as she has paid: with mourning and poverty and pestilence and plague. All of the nations have drunk her wine; she played the harlot when she should have been mine. And who will mourn Babylon’s whore when she gets what’s coming from the Angel of the Lord? From a safe distance, the merchants cry, “Who will buy our idols when the fake church dies?” [Lamentations 5:14--22]
11.
How could anyone bear this waiting? All my friends and family will carry on. While I’m here, the life I could have had evaporates. Concrete holds up my knees, I’m caving. The Accuser throttles my mind--- all my shameful private sins have been laid bare. Peace, child, peace . . . I’m waiting here with you.
12.
My Kids 04:39
[Listen to me. Don’t touch. Just put it down. What is it you want? What is it you need? You need to quiet down.] I feel like a fool because I’m called to train you up, but you inherited my sins. When I give you a rule, I always find that I’m in need of minding my own advice. ‘Cause I have to be like I want you to be . . . But I can’t. Oh God, help me please! When you’re not content, I remind you to remember all of God’s Providence. But I know how it feels, ‘cause I just spent the last half-hour cursing my bank account. And I have to be like I want you to be . . . But I can’t. Oh God, help me please! So I take you aside and ask you to forgive all my pride; I know how clearly you will see. When you have gained some years, you will know how I have been full of sins--- only God can redeem! So I feel full of hope because I’m counting on the Lord to give His Spirit to us both. I know I’ll be what He wants me to be, and you will be what He wants you to be . . . And we can. Oh God, help us please! Selah: I sing! Ya-ha! Uh do hear me, Selah? Amity: No, don’t call me Michael. I told you be kie-wit.
13.
My Wife 04:32
I want you to know, when I said, “‘til death do us part,” I meant it. It’s not always easy. It’s not always fun--- for you. Thank you for putting up with this, this sinful boy. With my clothes on the floor, and my mood swings, and my late nights working, and my thankless taking of your meals and body. I know how you must hurt. I know . . . I’m feeling the day slip through my fingers like money well-wasted. We’re falling asleep on the couch . . . No, please don’t leave. Thank you for putting up with this, this sinful boy. I know how you must hurt. I know . . . I want you to know: Even though I can be cold, I love you. It’s not always easy. It’s not always fun--- for you. So thank you for putting up with this, this sinful boy.
