Michael used this early mix of Before the Silver Tether Breaks with Phil’s dummy vocal to write lyrics for the song. Some major changes occurred to this song before it was finished. Phil and Michael decided to double the length of the song in order to showcase the instrumental part at the beginning of the composition (without too much distraction from the lyrics).

The dummy vocal included in this demo was Phil's original melodic idea for the song. At Michael’s suggestion, Phil added additional vocal parts later to create the simultaneous dialogue effect.
